Comments
from Bill Shaw
1. Temptation Waits
Comments: This has the intro and the opening song, Temptation
Waits. The part where the sound cut in out isn't my fault, that
actually happened at the show.
2. Not My
Idea
Comments: They don't waste a lot of time and start on the second
song immediately. Shirley takes a quick swig of water while
the boys start up. She bobs her head along with the song, smiling.
3. I Think
I'm Paranoid
Comments: Shirley expresses how much the band enjoys playing
this venue. A simple warm greeting to San Jose before she sings
the next song with them.
4. Special
Comments: The stage must be like a freshly-waxed high school
gym floor, as Shirley notices from her dancing and jumping.
Music starts at time frame 00:35, for you impatient ones.
5. My Lover's
Box
Comments: Shirley puts on Rita while that humming sample plays.
I heard her fine when it happened, but I guess she wasn't close
enough to the mic; Shirley usually says "Go!" at the
start of every performance of My Lover's Box. Steve plays certain
parts on the keyboard instead of what he did in earlier shows,
with the slide on the guitar.
6. Hammering
In My Head
Comments: Shirley hands Rita to a stagehand, and quickly sips
her water again during the opening noise (why don't you give
me a better word for it?) of Hammering In My Head. She throws
some pointing out to the crowd as she sings the line "I
knew you were mine for the taking."
7. Thirteen
Comments: Shirley chuckles at something in the beginning of
this file, but I don't remember what. They use a cool new sample
that contains chattering, like on the studio version, that they
weren't using in the beginning of the tour.
8. #1 Crush
Comments: The fans go nuts when they hear a new line of lyrics.
You'll know what I mean when you hear it.
9. Stupid
Girl
Comments: I know some of you have heard that lately, Shirley's
been deep frying the Spice Girls in this song. Now's your chance
to hear it for yourself.
10. Vow
Comments: Another new interesting sample is at the beginning
of Vow. I don't know how Bill's microphones picked it up, but
you hear a roll on the right, then immediately on the left.
My only complaint is that I can barely hear what Shirley's singing
near the end of the song.
11. Wicked
Ways
Comments: Shirley thanks their current opening act, and dedicates
their next song to a certain number forty-three. Nope, not a
professional athlete... Music starts at 01:04.
12. Queer
Comments: Shirley comments on all the people singing along to
all the songs (it's either my imagination, or you could really
hear it well during Wicked Ways for the lines "that sinking
feeling...walks out the door"). They've been playing Queer
this way for awhile, it's a cool crossbreed of the LP version
and the Danny Saber Mix.
13. Push
It
Comments: Shirley reacts to a fan; Bill was in the back, so
it didn't pick up too well, but being crushed up front, the
guy wasn't too far back from me. If you listen carefully, you'll
hear "Shirley has girl power!" She then gives thanks
to us fansfor our support. Music starts at 01:03.
14. Only
Happy When It Rains
Comments: There's this cool new slow string glow kind of sound
in Only Happy When It Rains now. At least I think it's new,
I don't remember hearing it before that night.
15. You Look
So Fine
Comments: Shirley sips on her bottle of water, and someone up
front screamed "Water!" and she tossed it (over my
damn thirsty head) into the crowd. It was soon ripped apart
by a couple dozen hands grabbing at it. She gave a silent snicker
when she felt some sprinkles of water hit her feet. She says
"thank you" for something. MAYBE it was to the stagehand
who handed her a guitar. She doesn't play it until she finishes
singing, and at that point, the band goes off and does their
own thing for several more minutes, making each performance
of You Look So Fine unique. They succeed in keeping the mood
of the song as well. One by one, they leave the stage.
16. Milk
Comments: The fans clap, cheer, stomp, whistle, bird call, and
eventually start chanting "Garbage!" a lot. Some stagehands
rustle around the stage, and another bottle of water is placed
on the stand in front of Butch's kit. The band comes back out
at around 01:09. Shirley puts her hands over ears and yells
"Shut up!", deafened by all the cheer, even with the
custom plastic ear molds she wears. They play Milk, and it's
another cool crossbreed, mostly the LP version, and some of
the Siren Mix put into place. Sounds awesome. Music starts at
02:10.
17. Lick
The Pavement
Comments: Fans respond to Shirley's command, saying happy birthday
to one of their light techs, Dave. The Girls Against Boys lead
singer also told us to say "Happy birthday Fuckface!",
but I dunno if Dave and Fuckface are the same person. After
this song, I think Shirley's talking about how much less people
sang along, LTP being only on import Push It singles.
18. When
I Grow Up
Comments: The show closer. I don't know if the last song in
the setlist depended on what the fans were asking for. It was
taped to the stage floor, but a stagehand just peeled it off
when it was all over. When the song was over, Shirley waved
and stepped offstage right. Duke and Steve quickly followed
her, both waving. Butch stood before his kit, took a bow Broadway
style, and stepped stage right as well. The fans still chanted
Garbage and the cheer didn't die for quite a while. And as the
endtro played, security up front even told me and the others
there to leave, that the show was over. Hope you enjoyed this
show at least half as much as I did (minus going home crushed
and damp with other people's sweat).
