On March 29 & 30, the Playhouse is holding a special event to benefit the
Malone
Community Center. Obviously, Malone has had some recent problems, and we want
to help. At 7 PM both nights, on the LCP mainstage, we'll present the national
touring group of the Omaha Theater Company for Young People in John Steptoe's
Caldecott Award-winning book, "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters".
This is a timelss folktale
that has been called the African Cinderella. Two universal
aspects of human nature -- selfishness and generosity -- are contrasted in the
two
daughters, Manyara and Nyasha. Steptoe, who died in 1988, wrote, "The
Cinderella theme is ancient, and almost every culture has its own unique version
of the tale. The popularity of the Cinderella theme in so many cultures for
so
many centuries tells us that industrious, kind, and considerate
behavior has always been an ideal to be encouraged."
Steptoe illustrated 15 picture
books, 10 of which he wrote, in his 20-year career.
Karen Abbott, playwright-in-residence at The Omaha Theater Company,
has adapted "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters" to the stage. Admission
is $10.
