From (dmakaitis@cox.net)

Hey there. We're doing Rocky again, so I thought I'd send you the info. Even
though it's not listed below, if you get a group of 20 people or more,
they'll drop the ticket price down to $10 a seat (yeah, I know it was only
10 people last year, but they decided to change it given the popularity of
this show... :-) Note that Gary and I will be in the band again, which
should be reason enough to come see it. Well, okay, Gary in the band is
reason enough - I'm just stage dressing...

Anyway, here it is. Feel free to spread the word!

:: afghan folio ::
from jay scott chipman (jsc@NebrWesleyan.edu)

This is information about an outstanding photography exhibit in Lincoln. I
invite you to forward this message to others who might be interested.

Luke Powell¹s highly acclaimed ³Afghan Folio² is currently on exhibit at
Nebraska Wesleyan University's Elder Gallery.

The show will be on display through Friday, October 4. A public reception is
scheduled for Wednesday, September 18, 2002 from 5:30-6:45 p.m.

³Afghan Folio² is a set of photographs (dye transfer prints) that documents
the vanishing beauty of pre-industrial landscape and culture and picks up
the thread of older artistic traditions. The collection has been on
exhibition in the Asia Society Galleries in New York, the Smithsonian in
Washington, DC, Manesh Hall in Moscow and the United Nations European
Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

As part of the labels for each photo, there is a narrative by the
photographer, with details about the country from a geographic, historic,
and current events perspective. The photographs take you on a journey
across the country, allowing you to see the land from a viewpoint much
different than that you may see in the news.

There is also a technical display, which is fascinating, on the dye transfer
process Luke uses to make the photographic prints. His process is similar to
a printmaking technique, allowing him to achieve a slightly surreal sense
of color. Luke Powell does have a web site with this and several other
groups of photographs for viewing http://www.lukepowell.com.
This exhibit is a wonderful resource for many disciplines.

An alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Yale
Divinity School, Luke Powell has traveled extensively throughout Asia and
Europe, capturing traditional landscapes and intimate, tranquil scenes in
pre-industrialized areas. When a book of his work was published in Paris,
the press dubbed him a ³peace photographer² because of the serene nature of
his images, which were often taken in lands now associated with violence.

³Afghan Folio² will set the backdrop for Nebraska Wesleyan University¹s fall
symposium, Visions & Ventures II: Conflict and Healing. Slated for Sept.
18-19, Visions & Ventures II will include such notable speakers as Dr.
William F. Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International USA,
internationally renown theologians Dr. Riffat Hassan and Dr. Martin Marty,
and Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and founder of the M.K. Gandhi
Institute for Nonviolence.

Nebraska Wesleyan University¹s Elder Gallery is located in the Rogers Center
for Fine Arts, 50th Street and Huntington Avenue. The gallery is open 10
a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All
exhibits are free and open to the public. Liz England, gallery director, may
be reached at (402) 465-2265.
