:: propagandART ~ september 23, 2003 ::
here are some great excuses to get a hold of that friend you haven't seen in a while...
this is the opening weekend
of the pump boys & dinettes at the lincoln community playhouse.
pump boys is a great, light-hearted, musical take on a day in the life of a
truck stop diner.
the characters are warm and friendly, and the music is a treat.
while the title may not be familiar to you, this is one of those 'sure fire
winner' shows.
the word of mouth will travel fast about how wonderful the show is.
so show your support by getting tickets early, and be one of the people who
start spreading the word that the playhouse has a show that shouldn't be missed.
this is what the playhouse
site has to say about the show:
On highway 57, somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, stands a gas station
and a sign that reads "Double Cupp Diner." Four guys work at the station
and the Cupp sisters wait tables at the diner. PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES is part
pop-country concert and part musical theatre. It is a triumph in every way and
celebrates the value of friendship and life's simple pleasures. Don’t
pass up this chance to share in a lively rock & roll, country and blues
musical celebration.
here's an additional note
from castmember shawn carlson (shawnc@lps.org)
Two guitars, two keyboards, a bass player, and a drummer.......and an empty
pit!! All musicians are part of the show and will be on stage!! We suffered
a tragedy along the way with the death of our bassist Vern Meints.....Two close
friends of Vern's, Kelly McGovern (who plays Jackson) and our drummer, who goes
by the name of Bonzo said that Vern was really enjoying doing the show, and
his spirit will be with us as we continue. The show will go on in his honor,
and Gary Hall is poised to step in and play bass for us. This
is a non-traditional musical revue that will apppeal to lovers of country and
rock & roll!
:: Scriptease: Anton in Show Business ::
LCP’s popular script reading series, Scriptease, continues Sunday, September 28, 2003, at 7:00 PM in our Gallery Theatre with a free reading of Jane Martin’s madcap comedy ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS, directed by Laura Kendall.
The play
follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole, and into
a strangely familiar Wonderland that looks a lot like American theatre -- the
resemblance is uncanny! As these women pursue their dream of performing Chekhov
in Texas, they're whisked through a maelstrom of "good ideas," power
politics and competing agendas -- each of which offers a unique answer to the
Three Sisters' need to have life's deeper purpose revealed. In the great tradition
of backstage comedies -- from The Royal Family to Noises Of -- Anton in Show
Business conveys the joys, pains and absurdities of "putting on a play"
at the turn of the millennium. May you live in interesting times.
Admission
is free. Refreshments are, too.

:: Blue River Art Barn Event ::
Jerene
Bishop and Cindy Rickard
“A Family Affair”
Friday September
26, 6-9 p.m.
Saturday, September 27, 10-4 p.m.
Sunday September 28, 2-5 p.m.
Talent may be genetic given that our artists are aunt and niece. Jerene Leslie Bishop graduated from UNO with a degree in art, specializing in printmaking. Jerene studied with Peter Hill and Tom Majeski and came to appreciate line even more than form and color. The nudes she exhibits are from her student days and more recent prints and lithographs incorporate color. Jerene is a psychotherapist at Bishop Clinic. She loves the work of Jim Dine and Georgia O’Keefe and makes prints because it's "Zenish, peaceful, a rest from therapy."
Cindy Rickard studied at Nebraska Wesleyan, graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute then got her MFA from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Cindy studied with Ken Ferguson and Chris Gustin and developed an admiration for Gaston Lachaise. Cindy is a sculptor using a variety of materials, plaster, lead, bronze, and clay. Early work included large abstract pieces that were "patio-sized." With the addition of daughter Hannah to her home, Cindy's studio and kiln have shrunk, she works in the garage when Hannah is sleeping. Her current work is figurative, smaller, and more delicate while still achieving a voluptuous quality.

October - Rebecca Copple, sculptor, also does painting and drawing. She earned
a BFA from Wesleyan and an M.A. in Museum Studies from UNL. Her pieces are seemingly
representative but are often visual concepts that diverge from reality. She
is part of the permanent collection at the Arkansas Art Center. She has been
part of festivals and shows in numerous locations including Loveland and Golden,
Colorado. We will be delighted by her sense of whimsy.
November 28, 29, 30 - Tom Hart will draw together a celebration of Native American culture featuring his work and others from the area.
:: Lincoln Arts Festival ::
The Lincoln Arts Festival presented by the Lincoln Arts Council in cooperation with SouthPointe Pavilions will be held September 27 and 28, 2003.
More than 8,000 people attended last year's festival, which featured an "artist's village" of 75 professional artists, exhibits by local high school students and booths that offered material from Lincoln arts organizations. This year's festival promises to be even more dynamic with an array of fine pottery, jewelry, paintings and photography by artists from 9 midwest states. Only in its 3rd year, the festival has been successful in attracting high quality artists because its main emphasis is the visual arts. The artists have the full attention of the viewers who have come for the purpose of enjoying and buying art.
Brienee Neemann of Syracuse, NE has been awarded the new Emerging Artist Scholarship for the 2003 festival. She recently graduated from Simpson College, Indianola, IA with a BA in Art and concentration in Graphic Design.
Festival hours are 10:00
- 6:00 on Saturday, September 27 and 10:00 - 5:00 on Sunday, September 28. Admission
is free. Food and refreshments are on site and nearby. The festival is located
outdoors on the west side of SouthPointe Pavilions, 27th and Pine
Lake Road, Lincoln.

:: NE Renaissance Faire & Pageant ::
The inaugural NEBRASKA RENAISSANCE FAIRE & MEDIEVAL PAGEANT will involve a vast array of activities and presentations from around the region. It will be produced by Festivals International, which specializes in events of edutainment -- a blend of unique family entertainment and educational history exhibits.

The site, dubbed the "Royal Oak Grove", is located near Ashland on Ranch Road off of state hwy. #66. It will be transformed into a veritable state fair from Europe of the Renaissance era (1500s). There will be dozens of shows and living history encampment troupes; everything from authentic horseback jousting to professional theater companies doing numerous stage shows. There will be various hands-on exhibits and activities for people of all ages. The opening day will be presented as a student "field trip" day.
The Nebraska Renaissance Faire will run on September 26th, 27th & 28th of 2003. Gate hours on Friday will be 3pm to 7pm, on Saturday 10am to 7pm, and Sunday 10am to 5pm. :: lodging help ::
HELP!!! I need housing help. The Angels Theatre Company needs a place for a visiting actor to stay, from Oct. 13 until Nov. 1. If you know of an apartment, a house sitting situation, a private room in your house, or an apartment in a friends house, that is available from Monday Oct. 13 until Sunday morning Nov. 2, please let me know. This is an unexpected expense for the Angels Theatre Company, providing housing for our guest male actor. Our budget is very small. I'm also looking for a car or a bike for his use while he's in Lincoln. Thanks for being in my network of friends. You can call (474-2206) or email me (Judithkhart@aol.com). Thanks. Judy Hart
