julie foudy:: US Women's World Cup Quarterfinals ::

The US Women take on our arch-rival Norway on Wednesday. In the worldwide FIFA rankings, the US is ranked #1 in the world, followed closely by Norway at #2. Team USA won the World Cup in 1999 without having to play Norway then lost to them in the 2000 Olympic Gold Medal Game while using basically the same roster of players as the '99 Cup. US v Norway games have been close, hard-fought and evenly split in recent years. It's a shame that they had to meet so soon in the tournament, as many will consider this the true finals (kind of like the Western Conference Finals in the NBA). Meaning whoever wins on Wednesday should have the inside track on winning the whole damn thing.

Hege Riise, one of Norway's best players, wrote an article for the official FIFA World Cup Website talking about her team's chances against the mighty US. Here are her parting comments: Now, all of my focus is on our game against the Americans. To be honest, I think we’re going to win. We as players can look at the Brazil game and say out loud that it was really bad. Now, we want to prove that we are much better than that. I can’t think of a better way to do that than by beating the U.S.

The Quarterfinals: USA v Norway, Wednesday, Oct 1; 6:25 ESPN 2

David Clayton-Thomas and Blood Sweat & Tears with Omaha Symphony Orchestra:: David Clayton-Thomas and Blood Sweat & Tears with Omaha Symphony Orchestra ::

i can't tell you how bummed i am that i'll miss these shows (i'm heading to portland to see the women's world cup semifinals). i hope a bunch of you get off your butts and get to omaha to see this electric evening of brassy but classy rock'n'roll. i'd love to have my inbox swamped with emails telling me how great these shows were. you can order tickets on the oso website. -m@
btw - olivia newton-john will be performing with the oso on the 24th!

The Omaha Symphony teams up with megaband Blood, Sweat & Tears, complete with lead singer David Clayton-Thomas, for two great nights of 60’s rock on October 3rd-4th at 8 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater. A third performance is scheduled for October 5th at 2 p.m.

Clayton-Thomas hasn’t missed a beat since his days in Greenwich Village in the 60’s when he was asked to join the American musical institution Blood, Sweat & Tears. His voice cuts through the horns that still characterize their fiery fusion of jazz, rock and blues. Their three gold singles, “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” “And When I Die,” and of course, “Spinning Wheel” are considered pop music classics by young and old.

As a daring and innovative band that was at the top of the music industry in 1972 with five successive gold albums, this diverse group creates a sound that still defies boundaries and is performed with consummate artistry. Clayton-Thomas has never sounded better and BS & T once again delivers the same exciting music, such as “You’re The One,” “God Bless The Child,” and “That Lucky Old Sun,” that made it a part of America’s musical heritage.

Join the Omaha Symphony and the revitalized Blood, Sweat & Tears during three exciting nights at the Orpheum Theater. Tickets are available starting at $14.50 through the Omaha Symphony Box Office at 402.342.3560, or at the website, http://www.omahasymphony.org.

:: Kathy Mattea :::: Kathy Mattea ::
Friday, October 3, 2003 - 7:30 p.m. ~ Leid Center for Performing Arts
Tickets: $32/30/28 ~ Students/Youth: $16/15/14

Kathy Mattea was part of a new breed of country music artists who emerged in the 1980s, embracing the folk and bluegrass sounds from her youth to help redefine this traditional musical style. Two Grammy’s, multiple awards from the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music, six number one singles, and a spirit of adventure have highlighted her 20-year career. I've always thought that if I can learn to listen to my heart and make music from there, everything else will take care of itself, she says.

:: Children of Eden ::

Dear Friends of the Arts,
It's my pleasure to invite you to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University Theatre's production of CHILDREN OF EDEN.

Based on the biblical book of Genesis, CHILDREN OF EDEN is a heartfelt, often humorous examination of the generation gap between parents and children. Adam, Eve, Noah and the 'Father' who created them deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children. The melodic, energetic score is a mix of pop, folk, rock, reggae, gospel, and powerful choral moments that delivering the inspiring message that the hardest part of love is letting go. The show contains some of the most beautiful music that can be heard in a contemporary musical and the 36 students cast in the show are doing a wonderful job!

The show is appropriate for all audiences. It is directed by Jack Parkhurst, with musical direction by Chuck Penington, and choreography by Ashley Penington.
