it's a shame when a true gem goes unnoticed.

fences is a true gem.

and it's going unnoticed.

if you enjoy small productions, this is right up your alley.
if you don't generally care for smaller productions,
consider supporting art for arts sake - even if you're sure the play isn't any good.
but be warned: you many go home wondering why you don't see small productions more often.

:: Blackberry Winter Returns! ::

this washed up in my inbox as well...

Consider this your cordial invitation to come with me to witness one of the midwest's premiere classic rock & roll bands, right here in Lincoln, NE! (I'm not biased, really!) Back in the late 60s, Steve Jacobi (my dad) started a rock n' roll band with some high school buddies called "Blackberry Winter". They played gigs all over Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa & Missouri, playing the popular hits of the day. As they got into college, they continued playing all over, even going as far south as Oklahoma, thanks to support from the popular 100,000 watt AM "boomer" radio stations like KOMA in Oklahoma City and KAAY in Little Rock. They enjoyed plenty of success up to the mid seventies when the band started breaking up since many of the guys were getting married or pursuing other things. However, as one of the original founders, my Dad always dreamed of "Getting the band back together!."

And that's exactly what he did in 1997. After getting most of the kids out of the house, Dad needed a hobby and started putting together the band. However, not all the original members could participate. So good 'ole Dad went out and recruited even more talented musicians than the original line-up, forming the current version of "The Winter", which has been playing steadily all over Nebraska for the last 6 years. The band currently includes a full 10 members! These include a 5-piece horn section, 2 keyboardists, lead guitar, bass guitar & drummer. They play the best covers from the 60s, 70s & even some 80s. Some of these include classic Chicago, The Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis Group, Steppenwolf, Beatles, Santana, The Doobies, Van Morrison, The Eagles, Huey Lewis, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton and more... There are even a few suprises. And, they play everything 100% live ! - no background tracks, no lip-syncing, no beat boxes. Just blood, sweat & rock 'n roll!

And you now have the chance to see them right here in Lincoln, NE on the night of October 10th at Duggan's Pub (11th & K St.). I believe they start at 8:30 and play 'till 12:30. This marks the first time they've played in Lincoln for over 6 months and they'll be ready to make an impression. I sincerely encourage everyone to come and hang out to hear some good 'ole brass-kick'n rock 'n roll, Blackberry Winter style! I've sent this email out well in advance so that you engaged & married guys have some time to kiss up to "The Old Lady", find babysitters, or whatever so that you have no excuses for not showing up! Ha ha ha! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. And, be sure to check out their website if you want to learn more:

Mark your calendars and I hope to see you all there!

:: Romeo & Juliet ::

I happen to have a very special October event that folks may enjoy. UNL's production of Romeo and Juliet, opens October 9 and runs Oct. 10, 11, 15, 16, and 17 at 7:30pm and the 19th at 2pm. It's at Howell Theatre at the temple building (12 & Q streets). Our production is set 'the day after tomorrow,' which allows us to make our own setting in a way. We use rapiers and daggers to fight, yet wear somewhat modern clothing with hints of renaissance throughout them. Our two-level set is an elaborate design complete with scaffolding; and the sound design uses techno music and modern artists such as Norah Jones to create our timeless story. If people want to see stomach-clenching humor, a big party scene, lots of sword fights, romance, and tragedy all in the same play, we the cast would love to see them at our production of Romeo and Juliet. Any questions, let me know!
