The Jester and the Music Box:: Tall Tales From A Tinkertoy Heart ::

From earliest childhood, I have thought of myself as an artist. My art is based more on process than preconception. My ideas come in the moment when the brush touches the canvas. Over the past 10 years, my work has been increasingly abstract and complex, although my paintings are still recognized for their narrative quality. And while I have become more refined in my technique, I am more in love with the pure application of paint than ever. The very texture and build of the paint and its plasticity lends itself to discovery through which memories emerge and combine with concepts and symbos from nature. Through this process of paintint, I merge all of these elements into a visual narrative. I have been described as a colorist, a magical realist, a symbolist, and expressionist and an abstract realist. -wjb

:: Yair Dalal & Erez Mounk ::
from Brent Martin (dbmartin5@hotmail.com)

Dear Music Lovers,
Please join us on the 25th of February as we welcome Yair Dalal and Erez Mounk back to Lincoln for their only Nebraska performance. These two musicians were here in 2003 as part of our spring concert series performing as part of a quartet (Yair Dalal and Ensemble AL OL). Their performance that evening generated a number of positive comments which have prompted us to ask them to return with their desert inspired sounds so that we might imagine life in the Sinai on a winters night in Nebraska. Dalal has played to audiences at the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center, Nobel Peace Prize Gala in Oslo, Norway and extensively in Europe and the Middle East. We are looking forward to another memorable concert here in Lincoln!

This performance promises to be a memorable evening of uplifting music inspired by the desert winds of the Negev. Yair Dalal creates a contemporary take on ancient themes in a fusion of traditional and classical Jewish and Arab music.

"The musical instrument Oud, is the most beautiful and important instrument in the Middle East. It is the most beloved and shared instrument for Arabs and Jews. With the oud, as in the desert, time resonates in it¹s own boundless form, a type of taqsim . Peace too, takes its time." - Yair Dalal

:: Powerless III ::
(from Tery info@starcityscene.com)

OK...Powerless is a bi-monthly music series I put on in conjunction with Duffy's Tavern, in which Lincoln rock and indie rock bands re-work their usual rock sets for an acoustic setting.

Unlike the other "acoustic nights" around town, which are more like "amateur nights" where any joe blow can wander in off the street with his guitar, I take regular rock bands, and have them rework their sets for an acoustic venue.

For example, Marianas, who are playing in Powerless III on 2/25, their music is mostly instrumental, very sequenced, relying heavily on computers, guitar effects, etc. and making them re-think their music for an acoustic setting. They're apparently going to be using cornets, accordians, and other types of instruments to do a completely different version of their usual rock set.

Suzy Dreamer & Her Nightmares, who played in Powerless II are a very Psychedelic Pop band with a 12-string Rickenbacker driven sound (using a lot of guitar effects & such), did a phenomenal job of re-doing their set with 6 string acoustics. They'll be releasing their Powerless set on Lone Prairie records later this year.

Powerless III: Wednesday, February 25, 2004 - 9:30pm
Duffy's Tavern - $3 cover
Featuring: Shyaway, Shacker, and Marianas

:: Tape ::

In Tape, two old high-school buddies reunite in a motel room in Lansing, Michigan. Jon, a driven indie filmmaker, has his first feature showing at the local film festival, and Vince, his oldest friend, part-time fireman and drug dealer, has come to visit him on the eve of his success. But things quickly turn confrontational, because there’s something else going on - something to do with Amy, the girl Vince dated in high school, and the thing that happened at the end of senior year...

Rough Magic Productions is proud to be producing Stephen Belber’s play Tape in both Lincoln and Omaha. Tape is a pressure-chamber examination of the subjectivity of truth, the tension between the ambitious and ambitionless, manipulation, revenge, violence, and its aftermath, with high-velocity dialogue and dark humor.

:: Glactic ~ Voodoo Funk! ::

Superfunk is coming to Lincoln! Galactic is a New Orleans-based jazz-funk ensemble, in otherwords Voodoo Funk. Not merely content to grasp the Mardi Gras Indians or Dr. John esthetics, Galactic points firmly toward the technological present with their primordial groove machine music. It seems they use as many loops as organic drums and bass, bass and more bass is the order of the day. Strange keyboard sounds come bubbling under like some lost Lee Perry session gone digital. Does that make this a "techno" or "electronica" record? No way, dude. Ruckus is a spooky ride to the other side of midnight. The party is either gonna break out or break up; it exists on the edge of that fine distinction, that moment in time when anything is possible.

Galactic at the Rococo Theater
Monday, March 1 at 8pm ~ Tickets $20.

:: Tick...Tick...Boom ::

.... tick .... You know about the phenomenon.
.... tick .... You've heard about the awards.
.... tick .... You remember the heartbreak.
.... tick .... But you might not know the whole story.
.... tick .... Before RENT, Jonathan Larson had another story to tell ....

BOOM! - His own.

tick, tick ... BOOM! is the musical tale of Jonathan's days as a struggling artist in SoHo - an artist on the verge of exploding!

It is 1990, and RENT is still six years away from its Broadway debut. He is on the verge of 30 -- faced with life-altering choices and fighting to keep his dreams. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city; his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue; but he's still waiting tables and trying to write the great American musical. With fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors, and a band, tick, tick...BOOM! takes you on the playwright/composer's journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster, RENT.

If you love RENT, then see the Midwest Premiere of the musical about the events that inspired it. You know how his story ends -- now see the beginning. Presented by Stages of Omaha at the Millennium Theater in Omaha.
