:: Shakespeare Rocks: Sweet Will & Saucy Jacks ::

Shakespeare will rock at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln April 12 when the University Program Council at UNL and Burger King present Sweet Will and the Saucy Jacks.

Sweet Will and the Saucy Jacks, also known as Fat Blu Cat, features Stephen Buhler on lead guitar, Ray Collier on rhythm guitar, Kim Bartek on bass, Rod Scher on drums, and everyone on vocals. Selections will include "No Contest," a country-ballad version of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"); "Lilies That Fester," a brooding blues based on Sonnet 94 ("They that have power to hurt"); and "Simple Truth Suppressed," an indie-rock take on Sonnet 138 ("When my love swears"). "Egyptian Queen," a retelling of "Antony and Cleopatra," sounds suspiciously like a Tom Petty tune.

The "Sweet Will" project was initiated by Buhler, a professor of English at UNL, after he noticed similarities between song structures found in popular music and the organization of a sonnet. Shakespeare may never be the same. In various incarnations, Sweet Will has played such venues as UCLA, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the International Medieval Congress at Western Michigan University.

UPC is a volunteer student organization designed to address the co-curricular, social, recreational, cultural and educational needs of the UNL campus.

:: martin sexton ::

Martin Sexton is one of the most talked-about recent arrivals to the "new folk" acoustic music scene. The guitarist, singer and songwriter has an amazing vocal range and makes effective use of it in his live shows. Unlike so many other contemporary singer-songwriters, his vocal style can best be described as soulful, combining the best qualities of singers like Van Morrison, Al Green, Aaron Neville and Otis Redding. ~ Richard Skelly, All Music Guide

A Child's Portrait of Shakespeare includes scenes from several of Shakespeare’s classics specifically geared towards young people. This production is appropriate for all audiences and is an excellent way to introduce children to Shakespeare.

There are two "programs" in this project and we hope that you'll consider seeing both of them. The plays have been condensed by NWU English and Theatre students into delightful 25-30 minute vignettes and are accompanied by biographical and cultural material about William Shakespeare as written by Canadian educator Lois Burdett. This project is supervised by NWU Professor Joan Korte and is directed by NWU students Brook Stetler and Matthew Schroll.

:: Andre Kole, Magical Spectacular ::

"My name is David Copperfield. In a moment you will witness one of the most remarkable illusions ever attempted on stage, anywhere in the world... Ladies and Gentlemen - Andre Kole." With this introduction, internationally acclaimed illusionist Andre Kole unveils one of his most famous creations in the field of illusion, the disappearance of a ten-foot-tall Statue of Liberty.

For this illusion, Kole makes a ten-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty weighing several hundred pounds, constructed of wood, fiberglass, and steel, disappear in slow motion--from the bottom up. David Copperfield has called Kole's Statue of Liberty creation "one of the most remarkable illusions ever attempted on stage, anywhere in the world." Adds Copperfield, "I don't know of anyone else who would attempt such a feat. Don't miss it."

The disappearance of the Statue of Liberty is just one of the original illusions Kole has created for his "Magical Spectacular". This unusual stage show also features one of Andre's most well-known illusions called "Just Passing Through".

Considered to be one of the great magical entertainers of our time, Andre Kole has performed before millions of people through live and televised audiences in all 50 U.
