:: NE Blues Summit feat. Bo Diddley ::

The Nebraska Blues Summit is proud to present Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Legend, Bo Diddley, in concert on Friday, May 7th.

There are few artists who truly merit "legendary" status. Without a doubt, Bo is one of them. Over the past five decades, he has indelibly stamped his mark on Rhythm'n'Blues and Rock'n'Roll. Bo's innovative trademark rhythm and on-stage presence have earned him his rightful place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and his immeasurable influence on the direction of popular music has surely earned him the title of "The Originator."

For the second year in a row the Nebraska Blues Summit will be the official event for Blues Recognition Day in Nebraska. Governor Mike Johanns will sign a proclamation in the Capitol Building April 22nd making May 7th statewide Blues Day. Calling on all citizens to recognize and support this rich and diverse artform.

Along with Bo Diddley there will be great music throughout the evening from The Omaha Blues Society Allstars, Lincoln Blues Allstars featuring two Nebraska Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers Sean Benjamin, and Jim Cidlik, and Kris Lager Band.

The show will be held at the Royal Grove (340 W. Cornhusker). Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 day of show. This is an 18 and over show. Doors open at 6:30 show starts at 7pm, we suggest getting there early to hear and enjoy all the great music.

Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, as well as online at ticketmaster.com. Please visit the Nebraska Blues Summit's website www.NebraskaBluesSummit.com for more info on all the bands, sponsors, blues day, directions, and more.

:: the band that saved the world ::

have you noticed what songs really get people dancing?
i'm talking about the songs that, regardless of the demographics,
get people on the dancefloor? well i pay attention to this stuff.
and as far as getting the widest range of getting people to
shake their asses instead of sitting on them: disco and funk always win.
it's a proven fact.

apparently the band that saved the world is a damn good funk band.
so that means there should be lots of shaking happening at
the zoo bar this saturday, may 8th. start time is 9pm-ish.
cover should be around $5.

Poets read, then judges flash Olympic-style scoring to determine who goes on to the next round until one poet is left standing as the champion. It's a lot of fun! Full monthly listings at: http://poetrymenu.com

:: 2004 PlainSong Folk Festival Fund-Raiser ::

A Kick-Off Fundraiser for the 2004 PlainSong Folk Festival
Join area musicians for an evening fun & toe--tapping music!

The PlainSong Folk Festival is now in its third year! We're really excited about this year's Festival. We have moved our venue to the Olive Creek Orchard just south of Hickman, Nebraska, and added more activities for the entire family.

The 2004 Festival is scheduled for the afternoon and evening of October 2nd from 1 to 9 pm. Music will be featured through the day, along with folk dance performances, storytelling, children's activities, and various workshops. The stage is located inside the Harvest Barn, so performances will go on, rain or shine.

The Orchard offers home cooked delights, hayrack rides, organically grown fresh produce, a petting zoo, and the clean air of the Nebraska prairie! Vendors will line the performance barn offering their crafts and artwork. We believe the Olive Creek Orchard will provide the perfect atmosphere for this year's 3rd Annual PlainSong Folk Festival.

:: fantasticks ::

The Fantasticks, freely adapted from Edmond Rostand's 1894 play Les Romanesques, tells an age-old tale. Its ingredients are simple: a boy, a girl, two fathers, and a wall. Its stage is a wooden platform, its scenery a tattered cardboard moon. Using only these bare essentials, the author and composer have managed to bring to life a funny and quite touching story of innocence...and of knowledge.

:: lucifer ::

Lucifer tells the story of a group of seekers who are dissatisfied with conventional religion. They summon and sell their souls to Lucifer, the prince of light, who demonstrates the history of an angry God. Lucifer tries to persuade his new followers that God has failed them through events such as the Salem witch trials, crusades, and Hitler's rein. Midway through the performance, Jesus appears to prove how He is concerned for the peoples' eternal life while Lucifer only seeks immediate gratification. The story continues with a point and counterpoint performance between Jesus and Lucifer, which is interrupted when a new character, representing a good person turned evil, tries to influence the seekers as well.

The rock musical is the work of Wesleyan theatre professor Jack Parkhurst and maestro Chuck Penington, who first produced the show in the early 1970s. "I would say we have more than overhauled this project," said Parkhurst, who is directing Lucifer. "We have added new music, a new plot, new themes. It is an original."

Parkhurst said the show's theme centers around ego, both positive and negative. "Its not about God or Lucifer, it's about humans' blame on God and Lucifer," said Parkhurst. "There will always be the yin and the yang. It's up to people to make change."
