:: Shakespeare's The Tempest ::

if you've never been to see some theater at the swan theater on the wyuka cemetery grounds...i gotta tell you...you're missing out! it's a beautiful place to see some great theater. trust me on this...give it a try! -m@

The Tempest centers around Prospero, formerly Duke of Milan, now a powerful but marooned magician. Twelve years before, Prospero was betrayed and overthrown by his treacherous brother, Antonio who, conspiring with Alonso the King of Naples set Prospero and his daughter Miranda adrift in a hopelessly leaky boat--"The very rats instinctively have quit it." Miraculously, the boat is tossed up on a desert island where Prospero, through his magic studies, is able to make two not quite human creatures into his slaves: Ariel, a spirit of aerie magic, and Caliban, an uneducated, brutish creature of appetite.As the play opens, all of Prospero's old enemies, Alonso the King of Naples, his brother Sebastian and Antonio, Prospero's treacherous brother, are shipwrecked by the eponymous tempest raised by Prospero's magic. Also on board are Prince Ferdinand, Alonso's son and heir, Gonzalo, a councilor still loyal to Prospero and two very drunken servants, Stephano and Trinculo -- as well as a small assortment of servants and sailors.Through adroit manipulation of magic, Prospero confronts his enemies, wins the love of Ferdinand for his daughter, recovers his Dukedom and in the process learns the value of mercy.The play alternates poignant scenes with farce and romance. It is one of Shakespeare's most poetic, entertaining and wondrous plays.

The Swan Theatre at Wyuka (3600 O St.) will present Shakespeare's "The Tempest" opening Thursday, June 3 and playing Thursdays through Sundays, June 3-6, 10-13 and 17-20. All performances are at 7:00 PM. Ticket prices: $15 adults, $12 seniors, and $9 for students. For more information or to reserve tickets, call The Haymarket Theatre at 477-2600.

:: For Your Consideration: A Tribute to the 2003/2004 Broadway Season ::

The 2004 Tony award ceremony is set to be held on June 6. While this doesn't directly affect the Lincoln theatrical community, Broadway will come to Nebraska this summer with "For Your Consideration: A Tribute to the 2003/2004 Broadway Season," a cabaret style performance to celebrate the Tony's occurring on June 4th and 5th at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

A newly formed group of young and local talent has crafted a review featuring hits from this year's Broadway revivals and premieres. Shows include the revivals of "Fiddler on the Roof," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Big River," "Wonderful Town," "Assassins," and the new musicals "Wicked," "The Boy from Oz," "Caroline, or Change," and "Avenue Q." This stellar collection of shows will be performed by Lincoln stage regulars Kally Duling, Mandy Murphy, Mitch Raftery, and Enoch Nathaneal Ulmer. Admission is a suggested donation at the door. Profits will be put towards future theatrical events for the city. Performance dates are June 4th and 5th at 7:30. Tickets may be reserved at broadwaycabaret@hotmail.com or at the door. For more information, contact Kally Duling at kduling@NebrWesleyan.edu.

:: Undraped ~ A Staged Reading ::

UNL Theatre's Nebraska Repertory Theatre presents a staged reading of John Haman's UNDRAPED, Saturday, June 5 at 7:30 PM in the Studio Theatre, third floor of the Temple Building at 12th and R Streets. Admission is free.

John Haman, a 1987 theatre graduate of Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, is a public relations consultant in Little Rock and has worked as an award-winning journalist in Arkansas, producing feature, news and investigative stories. UNDRAPED won the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Playwriting Contest, a competition judged by Rep Executive Artistic Director Jeffery Scott Elwell, who also directed a staged reading of it at Hendrix College in January.

The Nebraska Repertory Theatre staged reading will be produced by Elwell, and will be directed by Brant Pope who is also directing LEND ME A TENOR for the Rep. Cast in the staged reading are Rep actors Aaron Christensen, David Landis, Tammy Meneghini, Carrie Lee Patterson, and Leigh Selting.

According to information from Hendrix College, "UNDRAPED was inspired by the life of well-known painter Andrew Wyeth. Haman has been fascinated with the Wyeth family of American artists since high school and began studying Andrew Wyeth, the most famous member of the family and N.C. Wyeth's son, in earnest a few years ago  Haman said the secret relationship between the artist and his model inspired him to write UNDRAPED, exploring a similar, but fictitious relationship. It is the story of 'a man struggling with conflicting needs for independence and validation," according to Haman." The play is entirely a work of fiction. Haman emphasizes that UNDRAPED is not the Wyeths and it is not an historical biography. Inspirational motivation came from visiting N.C. Wyeth's mural-painting studio in suburban Philadelphia.

For more information about the staged reading, contact the Nebraska Repertory Theatre Administrative Office at 472-2072.
