Ravi Shankar was a pioneer of world music before we even had a name for it. A virtuoso sitarist, composer, teacher and writer, Shankar brought Indian music to the West in the 1960s and influenced musical revolutionaries from George Harrison to Philip Glass. Unsurpassed in his reputation as both an artist and a humanist, the 84-year-old Shankar continues to tour the world every year. Hit is website for more: www.ravishankar.org

Starcityscene.com's Powerless series allows Lincoln's rock bands to showcase a very different side of their music, and this performance should be no exception! The fifth installment of our acoustic music series features performances by Floating Opera & Minutia Stew.
Minutia Stew features songwriting by frontman Michael Fancy who played Yitzhak in Hedwig & the Angry Inch a few months back. He's an exceptionally talented musician and potent songwriter. This should be a great gig!

Rich Robinson (of The Black Crowes) ::
Rich Robinson's talents are already familiar to the millions of fans who've embraced his work as guitarist/songwriter/co-founder of the Black Crowes. But his debut solo effort Paper is a potent musical statement that's likely to come as a pleasant surprise to even his most ardent admirers.
The self-produced album - on the artist's own Key Hole label - finds Robinson singing lead and playing most of the instruments on 14 original compositions that reveal the young veteran to be both a distinctive, eloquent lyricist and an engaging, expressive singer.
Rather than coasting on his formidable past successes, Rich Robinson is clearly thrilled to be conquering new creative territory. "This whole project," he asserts, "has been a completely positive situation from the start. There's no stress, no bullshit, and I'm really excited about the whole thing. I'm really happy with this record, which was my only goal. And now I'm looking forward to getting it out there and playing these songs on tour, and seeing what happens."

E.C. Scott ::
E.C. Scott, The Empress of Blues, has developed her own style, a refreshingly original and distinctively modern approach that owes as much to her exceptional talent as a songwriter as it does to her remarkable, attention-grabbing vocals. E.C.’s enticing, rich voice, hook-laden arrangements, and intelligent, at times humorous, lyrics come together to produce songs that aren’t easily forgotten. “I Love the Blues,” she says. I just like it with a today sound.”

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story ::
“I saw Buddy Holly at the Playhouse,” claimed Margaret Susan Kravitz, a star-struck LCP box office volunteer. “He just walked up to the ticket window with his guitar. I said, ‘Can I help you, Sir?’ and he replied, ‘Maybe, Baby.’ I knew in a Heartbeat he was the real deal.”
Ms. Kravitz notes that she is Buddy Holly’s number one fan – and was heartbroken for weeks after the rock legend perished at age 22 in a tragic plane crash. “Oh, Boy,” Kravitz gushed. “It’s So Easy to get excited when someone like Buddy Holly comes back from the dead and starts talking Words of Love.”
According to Kravitz, Holly said he would return to the Playhouse on October 1 – That’ll Be The Day that BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY (book by Alan Janes; music by Buddy Holly) opens on the LCP Mainstage. The rock star will Rave On with fellow rock & rollers Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, as well as the incomparable Crickets, through October 24.
“It Doesn’t Matter Anymore!” exclaimed Kravitz, who announced that from now on she will answer only to the nickname, Peggy Sue. “I’m buying four punch cards and making my reservations in advance so I can be in the audience for every show. It’ll be Raining in My Heart until I can see Buddy again.”

:: Medea ::
UNL Theatre's University Theatre opens its 104th season of productions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with the classic Greek tragedy MEDEA by Robinson Jeffers, freely adapted from Euripides. Taking one of the world's greatest dramas, Jeffers paints an unforgettable psychological portrait of a woman scorned. The story, over two thousand years old, seems ripped from today's headlines as anger, betrayal, and alienation befall Medea. Abandoned by her husband, Jason, Medea's ultimate revenge leads to the slaughter of beauty and innocence.
The production, directed by Associate Professor Virginia Smith, will have performances October 7, 8, 9 and 13, 14, 15 at 7:30 PM and October 17 at 2:00 PM in Howell Theatre, first floor of the Temple Building at 12th and R Streets. There is a sneak preview/final dress rehearsal performance at 7:30 PM on October 6. Tickets to the preview are $5.00 at the door.
Individual tickets are $14.00, $12.00 faculty/staff and senior citizen, and $10.00 student/youth. Groups of 20 or more persons may purchase tickets at 50% of the regular price. Tickets may be purchased from the Lied Center Ticket Office at 301 North 12th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to performances in the designated theatre lobby. Phone orders may be made at 402-472-4747 or 800-432-3231.
