Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story ::
The Buddy Holly Story rocks!!!
I saw it the other night and loved it! At intermission, a number of people were asking if these were local musican and actors or if they were professionals on tour. No lie. I was the "LCP Board Ambassador" that night, so I talked to quite a few people. All were having a great time.
And you're not going to believe this...
We had a very special guest last Friday night: Barb Madsen...Miss Clearlake 1959. She introduced Buddy Holly at the Clearlake Winter Dance Party -- the concert he played in before before his fatal plane crash. She saw the stage version of the Buddy Holly Story for the first time at LCP and absolutely loved it. But then, there's a character in the show that's modeled after her...so she might be a little biased. :-)

Fifties Night at the Playhouse ::
Friday, October 15 is Fifties Night at the Playhouse! Make your reservations to see The Buddy Holly Story on the 15th and you’ll get a double-barreled blast from the past.
Local car clubs are sharing their wheels with us. They’ll display vintage cars from the 1950s in the Playhouse parking lot and will be hanging out with them before the show to show them off.
After the show, stick around for a 50s style sock hop -- kick off your shoes and cut a rug in the Gallery to classic cuts played by local band Fat blu Cat. Al and Roberta Doeden, local dance instructors, will be on hand to help you learn (or remember) the steps you’ll need to keep on swinging. It’ll be keen!
You’re encouraged to get into the spirit of the evening by dressing your part. Dust off those penny loafers and saddle shoes, pull the argyle sweater vest out of mothballs, get your poodle skirt off the closet shelf. Pony tails and pompadours are the hairdos of the day.
Whether you can actually remember Buddy Holly or just wish you did, you’re in for a treat at LCP’s Fifties Night on October 15 – be there or be square!

Lyp-Schtick ::
Lincoln's best improv comedy troupe is taking this town by storm. If you haven't seen them yet, GET TO IT!
Their style of improvization is (loosely) based on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" in the way that the audience helps determine the subject matter of the sketches. They'll set the rules, then we set the situations and characters. It's so much fun!!
Check out what the Journal Star has to say about troupe leader Beth Muehling and the gang!

Medea ::
UNL Theatre's University Theatre opens its 104th season of productions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with the classic Greek tragedy MEDEA by Robinson Jeffers, freely adapted from Euripides. Taking one of the world's greatest dramas, Jeffers paints an unforgettable psychological portrait of a woman scorned. The story, over two thousand years old, seems ripped from today's headlines as anger, betrayal, and alienation befall Medea. Abandoned by her husband, Jason, Medea's ultimate revenge leads to the slaughter of beauty and innocence. Directed by Associate Professor Virginia Smith.

Due to popular demand, America's premier stand-up comedian is hitting the road in a return to his first love -- stand-up comedy. Recently hailed as "the master stand-up comic of his generation" and "the best comedian of our time" in a Washington Post article by Tom Shales, Seinfeld has an uncanny ability to joke about the little things in life that relate to audiences everywhere.

:: Richard Thompson: 1000 Years in Popular Music ::
Richard Thompson first performed 1000 Years of Popular Music at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and has since done multiple-night stands in Chicago, New York, and London. Now for the first time he takes the show on the road. The set list varies from night to night, but has been known to start in the 13th century and move to medieval Italian ballads to selections from the songbooks of Gilbert & Sullivan, Stephen Foster, Ray Charles, Hank Williams, The Beatles, The Who, Squeeze, Prince, and even Britney Spears! All strung together by Richard's vocals, incomparable guitar playing, and dry wit. For this tour, Richard is accompanied by vocalist Judith Owen and percussionist/vocalist Debra Dobkin.
"This show proves two things: Richard Thompson can play anything, from thirteenth-century rounds and miners ballads to Squeeze and Abba; and he can make anything rock" - Rolling Stone Magazine

Coming in November ~ Bobby McFerrin ::
OK...without a doubt, this is the coolest event I've gotten to promote since Maceo Parker was in town a couple of years ago. I didn't have much interest in developing myself as a singer until I heard my dad play McFerrin's record called "The Voice." His may be the the single-most insprational voice I've ever heard.
I vividly remember the night my dad was sitting at the dining room table doing some work with "The Voice" playing in the background. When I walked into the dining room from the kitchen I was mesmerized. The sounds coming through those speakers stopped me in my tracks. Bobby was doing an a capella version of Paul McCartney's "Blackbird," but it wasn't like any vocal performance I'd ever heard in my life. It was as if he took his vocal part from the entire score of the song, but jumped from the bass line, to the guitar line, to the vocal melody line, to the harmony line, then back to the guitar line, and then inventing his own line. With all that complexity, he still made this beautiful song sound simple. and elegant. and intimate.
"This is pretty cool," I said to my dad. Which, for a teenager, is one of the highest accolades you can give. Once the song was done, he flipped the record over and started Side Two. The lead track was a version of James Brown's "I Feel Good" and it split my head open. My very first musical revalation took place right then and there.
"How does he do that?!?!" I begged of my dad. We sat there and tried to mimic the music we heard. It was incredible. To this day I practice singing like Bobby McFerrin. His recordings were the closest I ever came to vocal instruction. Not only did his records teach me to sing, they taught me how to use my voice and how to use music to open my soul. No lie. There's something trascendant about music. Bobby was my key to discovering how deeply music can touch the spirit.
I'll be putting my love for his music where my mouth is as the pre-talk speaker for his concert at the Leid Center. And I don't know how in the world I'm going to prepare an audience for what they will hear. His soul, his energy, his spirit and his virtuosity will be on display through his music...and there's no way I can tell people what to expect. It will be one of the most special nights of the year for me. I can't wait...and I sincerely hope many of you will be there with me to experience the magic of Bobby McFerrin. Hit his website for more about this beautiful person: http://www.bobbymcferrin.com.
