:: propagandART ~ november 17, 2004 ::

all of life's questions are answered in the arts.
vary the type of question you ask...
try an event that you wouldn't ordinarily attend.
the first four events, in particular, would be perfect excuses
to get out and breathe some new life into your dark corners.
(there are tons more events on the calendar for this weekend

:: after house at the lapin agile ::

ok...a personal note here...
this is a fantastic script deftly handled by homegrown talent.
this is the kind of thing that you hear about later and think...
'dang...i wish i'd seen that.'
well...i'm telling you now...go see this...you'll love talking about it later.
(besides, i'm hosting the after hours party on friday. come say hi!)

If you haven't yet made your reservations to see the remarkably funny and well-acted PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE, you have one more weekend to do so. You can add some value to the experience by coming to the show on Friday, November 19 - the audience will be invited to stay afterward to enjoy the ambience of "After Hours at the Lapin Agile."

Meier's Cork and Bottle will be here that evening, with a bar set up in the Gallery both before and after the show. You can purchase beer, wine, or soft drinks and take it to one of the tables on the Lapin Agile set, for camaraderie and conversation. Some actors from the show will join you, too. And the talented Mollie Manner will provide background piano music.

To make reservations for PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE, call the box office at 489-7529.

:: ted kooser's 'blizzard voices' ::

The Blue River Art Barn will present a staged reading of U. S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser’s “Blizzard Voices” and a mixed media art show entitled, “Traveling the Healing Hub” by local artist Tom Hart. Show date is Sunday, November 21st.

Nebraska poet, Ted Kooser was recently named the 13th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. The notice of appointment stated, “Ted Kooser is a major poetic voice for rural and small town America and the first Poet Laureate chosen from the Great Plains. His verse reaches beyond his native region to touch on universal themes in accessible ways.” Though some have held that poetry is for the elite, Ted Kooser has spent 45 years trying to write with clarity and dispel the notion that poetry is something to fear.

“The Blizzard Voices” is based on the reminiscences of those who witnessed the great blizzard of January 12, 1888. Organized as a series of poems from the point of view of various men, women and children, “The Blizzard Voices” dramatically captures the storm and its aftermath in the words of those who experienced it first hand. A cast of local actors including Virginia Smith, Joel Story Chet Kinkaid and Dave Landis will present the work as a staged reading.

Tom Hart’s artwork has taken a new turn with this exhibit, using mixed media to link the genocide of the American Indians with his own Viet Nam experience and the social context of today. Native Americans believe you travel the circle of the Medicine Web to find balance and harmony. Believing that the physical environment of plants, animals, rock and sky is closer to the origins of life than man, they build connections with the Earth to learn that what is around you is within you. The more you experience the hub of connection with the Earth, the more you see the infinity of life as the center of your own personal being.

Sunday, Nov. 21st
~ 2pm for the art show
~ 7pm for the staged reading

:: That One Guy & Suzy Dreamer ::

Just a quick reminder about this coming Sunday's show.
Hopefully you don't already have plans, and if you don't
this would be a great way to spend your Sunday night!

Starcityscene.com & Orange Whip Productions present...

Mike Silverman, a.k.a. That One Guy, and his "Magic Pipe", a plumbing fixture made into a musical instrument, is perhaps THE most unique artist touring the country today! Mike lays down a unique blend of drone, funk, metal, drum-n-bass, and other styles. His use of other self-made instruments including the Magic Pipe, electric saw and electric boot, (yes, an electric cowboy boot!) makes his frequent comparisons to other artists such as Primus, and Frank Zappa come as no surprise.

That One Guy has recently been signed to Ani Defranco's Righteous Babe records, and has been featured on CBS, NBC, FOX, Univision, and CNN, so he's well on his way to becoming a worldwide phenomenon. The only thing I can say that will really do justice to Mike's show is to tell you to go and see it, because that's the only way you'll be able to know for yourself.

Here's what Lincoln Journal Star entertainment reporter L. Kent Wolgamott recently had
to say about the band:

"With lyrics lifted from Kristen Bailey's dreams, the songs on "Rare Rocks & Gems" are distinctly personal and strange. There's a song about meeting up with "JFK, Jr." and his sister Caroline, searching for "Brendan Gonzales," being in a "Rolling Stones Video" when the Stones were young and cheery little tunes about "Dead Synchronized Swimmers" and "Melting Monster High School." Musically, Suzy Dreamer & Her Nightmares work in basic guitar-rooted pop, but there's something a little spooky and baroque about their approach that fits the lyrics perfectly."
