:: Burn This ::

Theatrix, the student theatrical producing organization at UNL, concludes its fall season with Lanford Wilson's BURN THIS. Through the shared grief of a friend's death, four New Yorkers confront their deepest fears and passions. The four are played by undergraduate theatre majors William Haefer, Mark Romano, and Ivan Lovegren, and Meredith Wachter.

According to the director, Jack Carpenter, "BURN THIS, Lanford Wilson's self-proclaimed best work, explores loss, stagnation and the passions which find and change our lives forever. It has been a vehicle for such stars as John Malkovich and Joan Allen and, most recently, Edward Norton and Catherine Keener. Its realism, comedy and fire have consumed audiences for twenty years, and its timeless story ensures it a place among the American classics. Thought-provoking, touching and inspiring, it is truly a masterpiece of contemporary theatre."

The Syringa Tree is the story of two families, one black, one white,
and the two children that are born into their shared household in
early 1960's South Africa. Seen through the eyes of a child, six-year
old Elizabeth Grace, as she tries with humor and sometimes palpable
fear, to make sense of the chaos, magic and darkness of South Africa,
we follow their destinies in a story that spans four generations, from
the height of apartheid to present day free South Africa. Kelli Chaves
plays twenty-four very different characters (black, white, old, young,
Xhosa, Afrikaans, Zulu, English, Jewish, etc.), and through
turn-on-a-dime transformations, she gradually reveals to us not just
the complexities of the world they share - their dreams, struggles,
laughter, and tragic losses- but their shared humanity. The New York
Times called the Off-Broadway production "instantly engaging… a
thoroughly persuasive transport to an exotic place and time."
