Joey Lynch mixed-media artwork Opening Reception ::
"My main interest growing up was basegall. Playing, watching, and drawing the stars of the game. It then shifted to politics. Dropping all attention paid to season after season of the sport. Now I've come back to watching, playing, and drawing ball players while still being opinionated on the policies and traditions of governments. This work combines the two subjects with mixed-media screen prints to display them as National Pastimes. This work is the begining of what I hope to be a continuing series." Joey will be presenting new work that combines baseball and social conflict imagery through mixed-media screen prints.

:: Jazz singer Giacomo Gates ::
When Giacomo Gates launches his expressive baritone voice in the interpretation of a jazz standard, he draws on a blue-collar New England upbringing, a natural inclination to song and a deep respect for the elders of the jazz vocal art form. What comes out is pure Giacomo Gates.
A Connecticut Yankee born in 1950, Gates turned his lifelong passion for music into a profession in 1990. Heavily steeped in the traditions of the original vocal improvisers from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald through their modern counterparts Betty Carter and Leon Thomas, Giacomo's own approach draws most heavily from the bebop-rooted masters like Jon Hendricks, Babs Gonzales, King Pleasure and most of all, Eddie Jefferson.
Playing major such U.S. clubs as New York's Birdland, the Five Spot and the Jazz Standard, Philadelphia's Zanzibar Blue, Blues Alley in D.C. and Snug Harbor in New Orleans; and major festivals like Detroit/Montreux, Telluride, Caramoor, Sedona, Clearwater, Fairbanks Summer Arts and at countless universities and jazz societies, Gates' enormous appeal and popularity are obvious from the many repeat engagements at these venues. He's also performed and taught in Europe and has toured Australia twice. Gates, a world-renowned jazz singer, will perform with the Joe Cartwright Trio of Kansas City including pianist Joe Cartwright, bassist Gerald Spaits and drummer Ray DeMarchi.

Winner of six Tony Awards®, The Will Rogers Follies is a dazzling spectacle about America's first international media sensation whose wit and homespun wisdom still ring true today. "It shakes, shimmies, struts, high kicks, parades, glides, grinds, taps, twirls, and just about jumps off the stage." – Associated Press

RASHOMON ::
Film Streams is pleased to present a visual and narrative masterpiece from legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa: Rashomon (1950).
More than half a century later, Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon still holds up as some of the most innovative storytelling ever committed to the screen. It also represents one of the most important cases of a visionary filmmaker overcoming the stacked odds of studio incompetence. Made at the outset of Kurosawa’s legendary career, Rashomon’s unconventional storyline bothered reluctant executives right up until the film’s release, whereupon it achieved widespread success and almost single-handedly opened the Western world to Japanese cinema.
“When one sees a film . . . you see very specific things. You see a tree, you see a sword. So one takes that as truth. But in this film, you take it as truth, and then you find out that it is not necessarily true. You see these various versions of the episode that has taken place, that these people are talking about, and you’re never told which is true and which isn’t true – which leads you to the proper conclusion that it is all true, and none of it is true. So it becomes a poem, and it cracks this visual thing that we have in our minds that if we see it, it must be a fact.” - Robert Altman

The Rumi Concert — Where Everything Is Music ::
"Don't worry about saving these songs! And if one of our instruments breaks, it doesn't matter. We have fallen into the place where everything is music." —Rumi
Music, dance, and the poetry of 13th century mystic Rumi collide in the lyrical and spiritual journey that is The Rumi Concert. The outstanding cast includes poet and translator of Rumi, Coleman Barks; cellist Eugene Friesen; world percussionist Glen Velez; and Zuleikha, whose magical style of storytelling through dance animates the genius and pure rapture of Rumi's writings. It's a remarkably moving performance. For more information: www.storyteller.com/performances.html#rumi
"I would not have believed one slender form moving across a stage could hold 400 people spellbound for an entire evening — until I saw Zuleikha." – Diane Skafte, Ph.D., Pacifica Graduate Institute
