:: propagandART ~ april 16, 2006 ::

it's easter weekend and tax weekend.
hope both went well for you! :-)

i'll send out another, more complete email later (if you can't wait...hit the prop website).
but there are two shows i want to make sure you hear about.
mainly because they are both off the beaten path and i have a personal connection to them.

first is the burning spear reggae show at knickerbockers on tuesday (details below).
this guy is a legend and a truly formative and influential figure in the genre.
he's still at the top of his game...in fact, his last cd was nominated for a grammy.
and my buddy, carter van pelt, is back from nyc to produce this show.
he's brought spear to lincoln a few other times...all have been superhot shows.
this one promises to be more of the same.

secondly, my girlfiend, jen lukas, is graduating with her mfa this semester.
and her thesis show is on friday. she's worked really hard on her show and is
fiercely proud of her work. check out the details below, and come see us on friday.

ps: and my email server got switched recently...
so if you've sent me email in the past 7-12 days...it got lost.

pps: the learned experience is a week from friday.
it's going to be off the hook. we're preparing some who, led zeppelin, maroon 5, crosby still & nash
and other tasty treats for the gig. so holler at me to get your tickets in advance and save a few bucks.
($10 in advance, $12 day of show...downbeat at 9pm @ the del ray ballroom)

:: Burning Spear ::

One of the most brilliant and respected roots artists in Jamaica's history, Burning Spear (Winston Rodney) has unleashed a host of classic dread records over the years. Part Rastafarian preacher, part black historian, more than any other roots artist, Burning Spear has illuminated Rastafarianism in song, sharing his beliefs with an avid public. In his 36-year career, Rodney, now 61, has released 32 albums, including the Grammy-winning Calling Rastafari in 1999 and an early catalog of work at the core of the reggae canon.

Rodney returns to Nebraska on April 18th for the first time since October 2000. Burning Spear performed in Omaha in 1996 and 1997 and in Lincoln from 1998 to 2000. Burning Spear recently performed in New York City at a sold-out Webster Hall concert with Sinead O'Connor, whose reggae tribute album "Throw Down Your Arms" features five Burning Spear covers including the title track. :: jen lukas thesis show ::

jen's thesis show is made up of work from her 'little girl trapped inside' series. here's an excerpt from her thesis statement:

In this series of watercolors and videos I'm presenting for my thesis, I am conducting an internal dialogue. I've tried to get in touch with my scared and vulnerable inner-self and let her talk. The objective of this thesis work has been to set myself free and to encourage others to listen carefully to their inner voices and to work at expressing their beliefs.

Reception: Friday, April 21 ~ 5 - 7 pm
Show runs: Mon-Fri ~ noon-5pm
Richard's Hall ~ Eisentrager-Howard Gallery Reception
(it's the building south of memorial stadium...the show is in the big room up the stairs. you can't miss it!)
