so jen and i celebrated the
second anniversary of our first date last night.
our first date was david bowie concert at the startlight theater in kansas city.
exactly two years later, we were back at the startlight to see depeche mode.
what a fiasco...
our tickets weren't very good. we were way off to the side.
the set was mediocre...it was like a bad high school sci-fi video from 1981.
the band was pretty stoic. the sound was bad...lots of feedback.
they had to abort a song after a few bars because the synthesizer that was
playing the leadline wasn't working.
the lead singer (dave gahan) wasn't singing the hooks, but letting the audience
sing them.
this made me feel like we'd bought expensive tickets to a depeche mode karaoke
night.
so, after about 5-6 songs, martin gore (primary songwriter and secondary vocalist)
got
to sing a couple. fine. great. then he starts the intro to the next song to
bring back gahan.
well, two guys in black ran up and whispered in his ear. he reports some technical
difficulties
stops the song and starts another one that he sings. fine. great. he finishes
and on come
the men in black again. then the announcement is made that they've "lost
the man in the middle."
show's over.
it was one of the more memorable
and entertaining concerts i've been to in a long time.
what a strange, interesting, chaotic and utterly rock and roll trip that was
somehow
fitting for the kind of adventures that we keep getting ourselves into.
through it all, i was going
to take the week off from sending out a prop,
but my good friend wendy is having an art opening on friday.
it's really going to be something else...she's been working really hard
for the last few months on her new work. i hope you can swing by...
